When my endo switched me to Synthroid from my Armour Thyroid/Cytomel combination, it was a disaster. I gained 12 pounds (which I'm still trying to lose) in addition to weight I'd gained before being diagnosed and my face was so swollen it looked like someone had beaten me up (family attested to this). Also my joints ached and I had no energy. Synthroid may work fine if you have what I'd call "simple" hypothyroidism (i.e., low thyroid not complicated by other hormonal issues), but many, many people seem to do better on Armour, sometimes with Cytomel. You should always have ALL your major hormones (thyroid, cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, etc.)tested if the med isn't working, IMO. Supposedly the most accurate way to do it is by saliva testing. |

I used Synthroid for about a year. It didn't seem to make much of a difference in how I felt. Labs looked OK, but I still felt almost all of my hypothyroid symptoms. I was still freezing cold to the bone, despite learning my FT4 levels were to high. I switched to Armour and the difference is night and day! Armour is so much better! |

Synthroid works as well as all other T4 drugs (Levoxyl, Levothroid, generics) but costs about twice as much. Go with a different brand if you can. |

I have been taking this medication for over a year now. I have Hashimoto's Disease. I discovered this by telling my doctor about persistant headaches I was having and a strange eye problem with blurriness. She took MRI's and various blood panels and came to the conclution. I rated effectiveness 4, because Im not sure how well its working without seeing up to date blood panels, last one was 3 months ago. I rated side effect a 3 because lately I have been feeling a very empty stomach feeling after I take it (medicine stomach). I rated convenience a 4 because its just a small little pill but you must take at same time everyday. I rated the value a 4 because where I am living at the moment it is dirt cheap, but in USA it tends to be more pricey. Overall, its hard to notice results for something like this other than maybe my tiredness is much better, and Im not getting severe headaches as often. The eye condition is there still. Overall, I will stay on this for a while. |

Had gained weight and my cholesterol and other lipid panels had increased. Was checked and my thyroid was not working properly. After starting the generic of this drug, my weight dropped, my cholesterol dropped about 60 points, my tryglicerides dropped about 150 points. The drug has worked great for me with no side effects. |

Synthroid does its job, I suppose. However, I'm still always tired, even with balanced diet and exercise. Biggest concern is HAIR LOSS. I'm 32, and the top of my head is very thin. Sun beats down on my scalp. Anyone have any similar experiences? |

I was on synthroid for two years. My weight gain continued, my chloresterol kept going up, my hypo symptoms were not adequately relieved. Started on 100mcg, raised to 150mcg. TSH and T4 values "perfect" so I was assured my problems were not thyroid related. Finally another doc tested my FT3, it was nearly two points subnormal. Switched to Armour and it has been the "magic pill". All symptoms GONE, LDL chloresterol down 68 points, 20 lbs. lost with no change in diet, temps finally up to normal. |

I have been on Synthroid 25mcg for almost 4 years. I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. The drug keeps my levels normal; however I never feel normal and I retain fluid. I think their is more to treating the thyroid with just a synthetic drug. You do have weightgain, depression, fluid retention with this disease. The disease needs to be treated all around. |

I was on Synthroid for years. I started getting bad muscle pains especially in my legs. I went from doctor to doctor and no one could figure out why. They said I had Fibromyalgia. No where in the list of side effects for Synthroid did it say muscle pains. I happened to com across a health chat board on the internet and several people said they got off of Synthroid because of the muscle pains it caused them. One woman said she almost ended up in a wheel chair because she could barely walk. I stopped Synthroid all together and within 5 days all my pains were gone. I am furious that this is not listed as a side effect. Also another consideration is that Synthroid is not always converted in the body to the T3 hormone. (active thyroid hormone) which was my case. I was on 100mcg of Synthroid and now I am on Armour and I feel so much better. |

I have been on synthyoid and it's generics 23 years. I still have many of the hypothyroid symptoms and am trying to find a doctor to switch me to Armour to see if it improves. |

I experienced very bad heart palps and gained weight and bloated up with synthroid. For me this was not the thyroid drug for me. I have tried a few and have not done well with them either. I will ask on my next visit to endo. to try the generic brand levoxl. I believe the only difference is the fillers. Synthroid is lactose based. |

Have been hypothyroid since 2001. Sythroid is a great thyroid hormone with no detectable side effects. I take the generic Levothyroxine at 100 mcg (after years of adjusting) and I have finally been stable for 8 months now. Good stuff. |
