4/3/09   1     1     1     1   I took this pill when I was 15 for extreme depression. It made me so much worse than I already was. Before I went on it I actually had good days but once I started taking it those went away. I would either sleep or cry the whole time I was on it. I walked around my school looking like a total zombie and that made none of my friends want to around me. I couldn't control my anger while on it either. The Dr. just kept up-ing my dose which made me worse, so I quit taking it without his approval. I got so much better once I stopped taking it, my friends even wanted to be around me again. I didn't sleep all the time. I felt human again. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody, but I will wish everybody who does take it better luck with it than I had.  :(

3/10/09   5     4     5     5   I've been taking 150 mg of Effexor XR for several years. I started with 75 mg. Effexor XR allows me to feel normal. It's not a happy pill; it simply allows me to feel like myself. I can cope with life. I still get sad occasionally but it's not like before. The side effects are mild. In the beginning, I felt nauseous so I started taking my pill at night so I could sleep through the nausea. Now I can take my pill any time with no side effects. I love Effexor XR because I feel level when on it. The only draw back is that if I miss more than two pills I get terrible headaches and by the fourth day I am an emotional wreck. That’s how I know the pills are working! If I ever decide to stop taking Effexor XR I’ll have to lower my dosage gradually. In the past, I tried Prozac and Paxil with no results. Effexor ER has been a blessing!  :)

12/5/08   4     4     5     4   I take this in combination with Wellbutrin and have seen amazing results. It had me feeling better in 2 days than I had in six months, and when you suffer from depression you know how important that is. I haven't experienced withdrawl as I haven't stopped taking it, but I can tell you right now it saved my life last year.  :)

Click to report rating    11/21/08   5     1     5     2   I had started taking Effexor xr for PD back in September. I was doing great considering that I as on 75 mg a day and was starting to feel wonderful just after the first day. About 4 weeks in to the treatment I started to loose my short term memory, fast heart beating and I didn't care about things anymore. I then had no patients with my children at work, got very frustrated driving and couldn't concentrait no matter how hard I tried. So I started tappering off of it. I then started to feel very sick to my stomach, had major head aches, felt like I was in an enclosed box and was shaking like crazy. Now that it has been just over 3 weeks with no medication I am feeling great. The only thing I deal with now is the outragous Dreams I have been having. Everything else has ended and that is the last withdrawl. Not to mention that if you don't have insurance this stuff is really expensive.  :|

Click to report rating    11/2/08   5     2     5     4   Everyone knows about the withdrawal syndrome for Effexor. Having said that, if you do need to discontinue or taper the dose down, ask your doctor about taking short term fluoxetine (Prozac). It can be very helpful. I did taper down and did not know about the prozac then, and it was pretty awful. Withdrawal effects aside, some may experience sexual difficulties, especially at higher doses. I take 75mg a day, and have no problems. That's all I am going to say about side effects. I think Effexor is very effective, especially for anxiety. This is the first time since becoming an adult that I have not had to take xanax or clonazepam. Those meds, while very effective, caused so much grief in my life, I could write a small book about them. But not here. I've been taking Effexor for four years now, and it works as well as ever. It is convenient (just once a day) and now that it is available as a generic, it is affordable, too. Thus, I give it a thumbs-up.  :)

9/27/08   2     4     1     2   I went to the dr complaining about anxiety and social anxiety disorder. I told him I didn't think I was depressed because I do not feel sad, I know what anxiety feels like. Apparently, Effexor XR not only is an anti depressant but it takes care of SAD, PAD as well as anxiety. Hmm... Seems a lil strange that one little pill can cure so many symptoms. I then mentioned a friend of mine who also has anxiety takes klonopin. This dr said klonopin "makes you a zombie". my friend seems very unzombified to me. Anyway, I went with his advice and he gave me a month supply. I ate one every day for a month. Within a few days I felt different. and not different good, different bad. I had no appetite, my blood pressure was raised, and my anxiety actually got worse. But I went on, for a full month, until I could not take it anymore. It made me feel like a zombie. It nulled my emotions and made my body not feel normal. I would not recommend this for anxiety AT ALL.  :(

Click to report rating    8/3/08   1     3     4     1   I've been on Effexor for 3.5 months (worked up to 150 mg / day over a period of 4 weeks) and I'm convinced it hasn't done anything for me moodwise. It only made me want to eat more, and I gained about 20 lbs over that time period. I've felt a bit better, but that's because my situation has changed and I've moved to a better place. I was really scared to stop the drugs, but since I moved I'm no longer on the same health care plan, so I can't see the doctor who prescribed Effexor. I noticed that I didn't feel any side effects when I was late taking Effexor, so 3 days ago I thought I'd try to see what would happen if I waited a few more hours. I felt none of the really frightening side effects that users on this site and others have reported. I figure better to get off it before my body becomes dependant. I'm scared that I'll feel some scary side effects soon, but so far, thank God, I feel fine. I wouldn't recommend it, as most folks seem to have experienced absolute hell.  :(

Click to report rating    7/29/08   5     4     5     3   I took Effexor XR for about a year and then went off of it. Within 6 months I started having panic attacks, anxiety and severe depression. I have been back on it since May of 08 and feel great. The only drawback is that I have trouble sleeping sometimes and my alcohol tolerance has really dropped.  :)

Click to report rating    7/3/08   5     5     5     5   I love Effexor XR. Withdrawals of going off of it do thoroughly suck though. All the symptoms I have read on this site are right on - had them all. If I don't take my pill at the same time every day I find that I am reminded by the brain zapping and numb tongue, then I take my pill and within 30 minutes I am up and running again. Advice? If it works for your depression, don't stop taking it and take it on time! If you want to stop however, ask your doctor about switching to prozac, which has very slight to no withdrawal symptoms, and then wean off of that. My husband did that and was totally happy with it.  :)

Click to report rating    5/30/08   1     1     1     1   This medication made me manic. I drank alcohol more and didn't have a care in the world. I lost weight, which was good. I had to split my dosage which was inconvenient. I was unaware of the withdrawls until I stopped cold turkey. I will never forget that week. I was bedridden with bombs exploding in my head. I was drenched in sweat. I couldn't sleep at night due to the "crackling and zapping" going on in my head. BAD BAD BAD...never again. I got 4 tattoos in the 1 year that I was on this. Also increased my libido vastly!  :(

Click to report rating    5/23/08   5     2     4     5   withdral... So, on the 2nd night, I couldn't sleep. I was getting the "brain zap" people talk about. Very uncomfortable and hard to sleep. When I finally fell asleep I was having VERY sexual dreams and nocturnal emissions.I should preface this by saying the drug DID cause a lot of sexual dysfunction and premature ejaculation. The next morning I felt nauseated and dizzy. It was so unpleasant that I could no longer wait to receive my meds and I went to my provider to pick them up in person. OK, I also have a tip to offset the sexual side effects:If you take the drug once a day like I do, wait until right before you take your meds to have sex. It seems like the drug has decreased enough in strength to allow normal sexual functioning. VAULE: not bad for me (ony $8 a month through the VA) but I've heard Effexor can get quite expensive. Conveinience: ask about the extended release (Effexor XR) version. One dose daily instead of multiple. Withdrawal should be done SLOWLY: 10% less/week  :)

Click to report rating    5/16/08   5     1     5     3   For me, this drug was a godsend, very effective in treating my depression, BUT, as you may ahve already read, the side effects of coming off were uncomfortable, (brain shocks?) they DO go away, weaning off is the best way, go down to the 37.5s, then every second day, then every third and so on, but do this over a period of at least 2 mnths once you get to the 37.5s.  :)

Click to report rating    5/1/08   4     2     4     4   After trying numerous anti-depressants prescribed by a psychiotrist (not an MD) over a 12-month period, I was finally started on, and worked up to Effexor XR @225mg and Celexa @60mg daily. It took a couple of months to get the meds into my system and to start feeling better, but I have been functioning at this level for over 6 years now. At first I was extremely sleepy and did gain about 10 pounds, but it was a small price to pay to be able to live and function again. It seems like it would go without saying that you shouldn't go cold turkey, or try to wean yourself off of prescription medication. Besides possible seizures, heart-attack or stroke, the withdrawls will be hellatious. You're messing with the chemicals in your brain... I wouldn't suggest it without a doctor's advise AND supervision... and NOT an MD, but someone specializing in depression and brain chemicals.  :)

Click to report rating    4/17/08   3     2     3     3   I have been on this med for about 4 months. I am on 75mg. I think I need to have my dose higher because I am having good days and then really depressed days. I tried to come off of it and I thought I was going to loose my mind. I went back on it. I really need meds for anxiety, panic attacks and depression, and this seemed to work at first, but now I think I need a higher dose. The worse for me has been the lack of emotions. I just don't seem to care about anything anymore. I also lost my sex drive. This med to me is damned if you do and damned if you don't. This is the only medicine I have ever taken for this problem so I can't compare it to anything else.  :|

This medication has turned my life into a living hell. I feel as if I am on an emotional rollercoaster.... one minute I'm extremely happy the next I am screaming and crying. This medication has also made my blood pressure extremely high and i'm always tired because I can't ever sleep. Please whatever you do do not take this medication! I have been on a lot of antidepressants and have NEVER had side effects as bad as this!  :(

Click to report rating    3/12/08   2     1     1     1   BEWARE!!!!!This drug is horrible!!!! I am 6 days into withdrawals from stopping this drug, and it is HELL!!!! Sure your doctor will tell you to taper off but guess what it only stays in your system for 10-18 hours so tapering every other day is absolutely useless. This drug should only be used for patients as a last option or candidates that need to be medicate for the rest of their lives. I don't believe it is normal for anyone to have brain shocks from a drug. This is the most frightening experience. Electric shocks inside my head that zap every time I move my eyes. This cannot be safe for anyone!!! I can only hope that this will not leave permanent damage. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!!!!!!  :(

Click to report rating    1/16/08   4     4     5     4   I''ve been taking it for a little over a year with positive results for Major Depressive Disorder, Recurrent. I had the initial period of nausea and headache for a few weeks, but it was not that bothersome. Then, the only side effect that remains is sleepiness, so I now take it in the evening when does not interfere with my daily activities. However, it is expensive, but after the numerous medications I've tried with little results or with troublesome side effects it is worth it. During the last several months due to circumstantial increase in my depression, I gradually was increased to 375 mg a day with no additional side effects. Overall, it has elevated my mood enough for me to participate in my own treatment and do social things to assist in alleviating some depressive symptoms.  :)

Click to report rating    12/26/07   1     1     1     1   Between the cost and the TERRIBLE side effects trying to come off this stuff, I cannot believe the dr ever gave this to ANYONE. I am experiencing the electric shocks, the dizziness, the confusion, the irritability, the crying and I was only on the 75mg dose for 6 mo's. I cannot imagine being on a larger dose for a longer time. Might as well try coming off of heroine, that's what I imagine this is like. This should not be given to anyone. They sure don't tell you about the withdrawal mess. I've tried to stop cold turkey several times and each time I gave up because I felt so bad. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICATION. IT ISN'T WORTH THE BARELY NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE. THIS DRUG IS AWFUL AND NO ONE SHOULD GO THROUGH THIS. EVER!!!  :(

Click to report rating    12/6/07   4     3     3     3   The first time I was on Effexor was when I was 15 years old. I was suffering from anxiety and panic attacks all of the time. It got to the point wher I was unable to leave my room. I was on the drug for 9 years. I went off of it 6 months ago because I pregnant. I weaned off at about 7 months gestation. My baby is fine. The withdrawal was really not that bad. I tapered off at my own pace. Just a few beads at a time. I am currently restarted this medication due to a return of my anxiety/panic disorder.  :|

Click to report rating    11/7/07   5     5     5     4   I've been on Effexor SR for several years, and have had no porblems, even at the max. dose of 225 mg. However, Effexor and Effexor XR are like two completely different medecines to me. I had a bad reaction to plain Effexor several years ago. Becaue of a sleep disorder, I take this drug when I wake up, which could be quite a few hours different each day. That doesn't effect my taking Effexor at all No problems, and I don't want to get off of it, even tho' my insurance company raised the co-pay by double.  :)

Click to report rating    9/7/07   5     1     2     2   While I continue to take this drug, I am not a fan. It is prohibitively expensive, and very inconvenient. Even though I have been on it for about five years, I still occasionally get 'brain shocks' for no reason. If I miss my dose by more than an hour or two, the brain shocks will inevitably occur. This is nothing compared to what it's like to stop taking this medication all together. I am physically addicted to it. DO NOT take this medication unless absolutely necessary.  :|

8/6/07   1     1     3     1   This was the most horrible drug I have ever taken. I was taking it for depression/anxiety and it did NOTHING to help with that even up to 450 mg. No one warned me about the brain zaps and I thought I was going nuts. I'd be sitting at the library table and suddenly feel like I couldn't move and there was a buzz in my ears. Coming off wasn't too bad because I was also starting up on Prozac at the same time. The overlap helped mask the withdrawl. Actually I don't remember having any problems coming off at all.  :(

Click to report rating    8/5/07   5     3     4     5   I have tried most of the anti-depressants out there and this is the only one that has really worked. I have been on this 2 years now and I am terrified to ever go off. I started taking it more for anxiety and panic more so then depression. It really has alleviated alot of the panic and anxiety I used to experience on a daily basis. I have noticed some weight gain but its a small trade off for the benefit of feeling "normal" that it has given me. I do find it is NOT a good thing to even miss one dose as I get a very strange headache. Its only happened twice and won't happen again. After trying everything out there, this really has been a blessing. I was a bit nervous about trying this one because I had heard it had bad side effects, I'm glad I gave it a go, because I am much happier then ever before.  :)

Click to report rating    6/29/07   5     3     5     4   Started on cipramil and it had some positives for a short while but am now on Effexor XR and it has been the best thing I did. Some side effects to start with, especially with major perspiration around my neck but that settled. Taking Effexor XR for depression and anxiety and I have managed to cope extremely well with some major work challenges without going into a tailspin. Occasionally get depressed but now epsiodes last a couple of hours to a coupleof days and I know that it isn't the end of the world and things will straighten out again. I am so grateful that this works for me as I can start to beand feel normal with all its highs and lows without the extreme lows. My doctor says they are forever (2 years at the moment)but he knows I am aiming to taper eventually -I am on 300mg at the moment. Initially I started on Effexor (not XR) but they were not as effective as they made me go up and down a bit each day. Cost is a factor and I am grateful that I hit the pharmaceutical limit.  :)

Click to report rating    6/20/07   3     3     3     4   I took Effexor XR at two different points in my life for anxiety. First time I didn't feel it was very effective, but it did decrease my appetite significantly. I stopped taking it in favor of Xanax for anxiety attacks. Second time I started taking it after going through benzo/alcohol addiction, felt positive effect after dosage increased to max. Didn't feel extreme emotion either way, not very happy not very sad. Just kind of 'there'. Never had terrible negative effects. I missed doses all the time with no significant problem. Eventually stopped it all together, I think the withdrawal symptoms were more psychological. Withdrawal symptoms, if any were minor. I wouldn't recommend it or not recommend it.  :|

Click to report rating    4/28/07   4     1     4     2   Effexor XR seems to be helping me quite nicley once I got past the side effects. Nausea and sleepy mostly, but also weird dreams. Those who have anxiety may enjoy the mind-numbing side effects. However, if you are blessed with depression and anxiety, this may not work until you have a higher dose. Just yesterday I was told to increase to 225mg. I have been on the drug for about one year+, and haven't reached my "target dose" yet. Hopefully, this will work! Since I don't have high blood pressure, I am safe to take Effexor. It is keeping me sane, but my doc says "Go for the gold" until I feel great instead of boardline. It is very high-priced. I do have coverage, and it is STILL very costly. Finally, the withdrawal of this drug is horrible Please don't ever stop cold turkey. I felt so sick. I couldn't eat/sleep and lost weight even at 120lbs. There were zaps in my head and shaky body feelings. I cried and my roommate found me and made me take it. 3hrs later..I feel fine. Just taper!  :|

Click to report rating    4/13/07   3     1     3     2   I had been taking Zoloft since 8th grade until I attempted suicide my junior year of high school (2003). I was then switched to Effexor XR and immediately my ability to concentrate and care about anything plummeted (along with my grades). I had always been an A and B student until I received my first C my junior year of high school, then a couple C's and an F my senior year, and then completely failed out of college my first year. Half the time I would drive to the school only to sit in the parking lot, unable to go to class. I barely remember my senior year of high school as well as half of last year. I stopped taking it when I found out I was pregnant in September of 06, and I still have memory lapses. On Easter, I gave my dad a hug, then my brother, then my step-mom, and then I hugged my brother again because I forgot I just hugged him. I don't remember plots of movies I watched just the other day. I feel this is related to Effexor, and the withdrawl effects were HORRIBLE.  :(

Click to report rating    4/11/07   5     3     5     4   I was given this to help with my nervous system, upper gastrointestinal IBS, fibromyalgia, and mild anxiety/depression. It has been the only drug to work for all of them! I went from vomitting 3-4 times per day, anxious, and overwhelmed to the point of insomnia and now have a 'normal' life. I have missed very little work due to health issues and have been able to live a stable life. I've even skipped doses occassionally and it has been fine... after my body adjusted to the drug... the adjustment period was a little weird. My doctor said people often go one of two directions, they either get really energetic or really sleepy during their adjustment period. I got both... so I learned I had to take it right before bed... I got tired... and then the energy would kick in about 10 minutes before my alarm went off in the morning... so sort of a win-win situation there... it's been that way ever since.  :)

Click to report rating    3/15/07   3     1     1     2   For myself, any effectiveness of effexor xr, is blunted by the nausea, thirst, sweating, abnormal body odour, soaked feet, ringing in ears, yawning, headache, mouth sores, sleep disturbance, and total "equipment" failure. What makes it worse, is that one cannot temporarily go off it to relieve the symptoms, because of the horrendous withdrawl effects, which include electrical short circuits in your head. Once you quit this, you do not want to go back.  :(

Click to report rating    3/13/07   2     1     4     1   I have been taking Effexor XR for 3 years. I'm not sure it has done anything, exept make me fear missing a dose. Once I forgot 3 days and I thought I was loosing my mind. I was dizzy, DEPRESSED and the anxiety was so bad I went to emergency for help. I did not put two and two together. That it was Effexor withdrawl. I would like to get off it but I'm scared of the effect.  :(

Click to report rating    2/9/07   1     1     5     1   I was given this for Fibromyalgia. It did nothing for me & was terrible to come off. Weird electrical shock feelings in my head, terrible nausea, it took a long time. I wouldn't recommend it, unless you plan to take it for the rest of your life.  :(

Click to report rating    1/14/07   4     3     3     5   While I've tried others, I've used this now for about 5 years, 150mg a day (origingly 300) Althought the side effects initally were tough (sleepiness, nausia) it passed with time. However, if I do forget and miss a dose, I do notice a strange sensation, but it's done wonders for me. Gone from a life of semi-hell to a normal functional member of society. While this may not work for everyone, it's worked well for me.  :)

Click to report rating    11/17/06   1     1     3     2   Dear GOD... if your Dr. suggests this, RUN! Run as fast and as far as you can. If by some chance you're already on it and it works, great. However if for any reason you don't need it anymore or otherwise decide to stop taking it... IT IS HELL! The side effects are HORRIBLE. I quit taking it and I still have memory, mood, and the weird shocks (if you've missed your dose for a day or so or have stopped taking it, or lowered the dose, you probably understand what this is) from this drug. From what I've read in other forums there are some people that continue to have these effects for many years after discontinuing. This med has far too many side effects and should ONLY be used in extreme cases as a last resort, and doctors should be sued for not making the long term side effects perfectly clear! This med has made my life hell.  :(

Click to report rating    9/13/06   5     4     5     2   Effexor XR has totally worked for me. I was on Lexapro for GAD and it didn't quite work 100%, however, once I switched to Effexor I noticed an immediate difference. I'm on 183mg/day and don't seem to have any side effects, including sexual. Different antidepressants work for different people, but for anxiety disorders SNRI's seem to work better than SSRI's.  :)

Click to report rating    8/7/06   5     2     4     5   I first tried zoloft, yet it did little to me, so my psychologist talked to me about Effexor Xr. I dont regret at all taking it. It has made me feel alot better about myself, and other things around me. You do get the side affect of a bad sex drive and inability to get aroused, but i was depressed to the point where i couldnt anyway, And after you get used to the drug, your sexual ability will come back with delayed ejaculation... my girlfriend dont complain about that either ! Back onto the point though, I highly recommend this to anyone suffering depression.  :)
